WHY DID KING SAUL CONSULT A MEDIUM WHO SAW "GODS COMING UP OUT OF THE EARTH''?

In the middle of the night, a king pulled a hood over his face, slipped past his own guards, and went to consult a medium — the very thing he himself had outlawed. And when she performed her ritual, she screamed and cried out that she saw "gods coming up out of the earth." So why did King Saul, God's own anointed king, end up at a witch's house at midnight? This is NOT a story that endorses talking to the dead — it's one of the most sobering warnings in all of Scripture about it. And hidden inside this midnight séance (1 Samuel 28) is a truth that will change how you think about the moments when heaven feels silent. In this study we trace, line by line: • The silence of God — why God stopped answering Saul, and what that silence actually was • The tragic irony — the king who BANNED every medium now sneaking out in disguise to consult one • "Bring up Samuel" — why Saul would cross every line for an answer except the one that mattered • "Gods coming up out of the earth" — the strange Hebrew word (elohim), and the honest debate: was it really Samuel, a deceiving spirit, or God Himself breaking into the ritual? • The word Saul didn't want — the death sentence read back to him from the grave • The one thing that was missing — why David could sin worse and be restored, while Saul fell Here is the heart of it: Saul's downfall was never mainly the witch, or the séance, or the spirits rising from the ground. It was the story of a soul that would do ANYTHING — break God's law, consult the dead, grovel in the dark — except the one simple thing that heals: repent. Turn around. Come home. David sinned worse on paper, but when Nathan confronted him, David broke and turned back. Saul never did. And it all points to Jesus. Saul cried out and heaven went silent because of his own sin. On the cross, Jesus cried "My God, my God, why have You forsaken Me?" and heaven went silent because of OURS — so that you would never have to face the silence Saul faced. Saul tried to pull a word UP out of the grave and got a death sentence. Jesus rose UP out of the grave Himself and became the word of life. The silence Saul ran from was the very God he could have run to. Don't run into the dark. Turn around. The door is open, and the light is still on. 📖 Chapters / timestamps below. 🔔 Subscribe for more deep-dive Bible studies — the Bible is deep, it doesn't have to be complicated.
