The Gods of Theros Are NO JOKE

The Gods of Theros are unlike almost any other deities in Magic: The Gathering. Born from the collective belief of mortals through the power of Nyx, they embody the ideals, fears, and ambitions of an entire civilization. From Heliod's overwhelming pride to Erebos' quiet inevitability, every god is shaped by worship—and every one of them is capable of reshaping the fate of a plane. Here's the complete story of the Gods of Theros. In this Magic: The Gathering lore guide, we explore the origins, powers, and histories of the Theros pantheon, examining how Nyx gave rise to these divine beings and how their rivalries have defined the plane for generations. Along the way, we'll dive into the stories of Heliod, Thassa, Purphoros, Nylea, Erebos, Athreos, Kruphix, Ephara, Phenax, Mogis, Iroas, Keranos, Karametra, Pharika, and Klothys, uncovering the philosophies they represent and the conflicts that shaped their world. From Elspeth's rise and Xenagos' ascension to godhood, to the return of the Titans and the aftermath of New Phyrexia's invasion, discover why the Gods of Theros remain some of the most fascinating and influential characters in MTG lore—and how faith itself became the greatest source of power in one of Magic's most mythological planes.
