It's not just characters. It's art direction. It's architecture. It's clothing. It's environments. It's historical aesthetics. Even the concept of beauty itself seems increasingly suspicious in parts of the AAA industry. And the most obvious example is character design. For years, gamers have noticed a growing trend toward female characters being made less feminine, less glamorous, and more unattractive while male characters can still be presented as handsome and muscular. Why? Modern developers and corporate culture increasingly treat beauty itself as something that needs to be criticized or toned down. Attractive female characters are sometimes portrayed as problematic, unrealistic, objectifying, or exclusionary, while making those characters less attractive is framed as more "empowering." But there's a pretty obvious contradiction here. If women are supposed to be capable of everything men can do, why does that so often come with making female characters increasingly masculine? Why does a strong woman have to look like a man? Why can't a woman be physically powerful, competent, intelligent, intimidating, and still look feminine? Those characteristics aren't mutually exclusive. Sometimes it feels like certain modern writers don't actually know how to write a compelling female character without simply copying traditionally masculine traits. Give her a deep voice. Make her physically huge. Make her emotionally detached. Give her the personality of a stereotypical male action hero. Then call it progress. But that's not necessarily good characterization. A compelling woman doesn't need to stop being feminine to be strong. And femininity itself isn't a weakness that needs to be corrected. The same problem can happen with beauty more broadly. Gaming used to be filled with beautiful fantasy worlds, extravagant costumes, elaborate architecture, striking characters, dramatic landscapes, and larger-than-life aesthetics. Now, sometimes it feels like everything has to be deliberately ugly, gritty, awkward, or "realistic" in exactly the same way. And when players complain, they're told that they care too much about appearances. But visual design is part of the experience. Beauty matters in art. The real concern is what happens when HR departments, corporate culture, social-media pressure, or ideological expectations start influencing creative decisions more than artists and game designers do. At that point, character design stops being about making memorable characters and starts becoming about satisfying a checklist. And checklists don't make great games. In this video, I react to Deranged Doomer's arguments, discuss the growing criticism of character design in modern gaming, and examine why so many games seem increasingly unwilling to embrace beauty, femininity, glamour, historical aesthetics, or larger-than-life artistic design. Because a game doesn't need to be ugly to be meaningful. And making everything uglier... ...isn't the same thing as making it better.
