On May 26, 2021, police in Salt Lake City, Utah, launched an urgent investigation after Jeremy Aguilar discovered the teenager’s remains inside his trailer. His own 17-year-old son, Rowdy Aguilar, was nowhere to be found. But investigators quickly uncovered disturbing evidence. Ring doorbell footage showed Nick and Rowdy entering the home together. Rowdy’s phone was discovered inside the crime scene. Blood was visible on his clothing when police unexpectedly encountered him near a Target parking lot. And during interrogation, detectives watched his story begin to collapse. Rowdy initially denied even knowing Nick. As detectives confronted him with mounting evidence, however, his version of events repeatedly changed before he eventually claimed the killing happened in self-defense. Investigators would later discover Nick’s missing remains hidden in garbage bags behind the Aguilar property. Evidence showed Nick had suffered 26 stab wounds to the head and neck. Prosecutors alleged Rowdy then attempted to conceal the killing by dismembering Nick’s body and disposing of the remains. In September 2025, Rowdy Aguilar pleaded guilty to aggravated murder with a mental health condition and was sentenced to an indeterminate prison term with a minimum of 25 years. But one question remains unanswered: What truly caused Rowdy Aguilar to murder a teenager who considered him a friend?
