Description

A static pit lane camera, then the shot slides straight into the onboard view on a Red Bull, and it plays as one continuous move. Good piece of broadcast work, and it's going around with people guessing that AI is syncing the two angles. Worth saying plainly: nobody has confirmed that, and F1 has never claimed it. What F1 does use AI for in its broadcast is documented, and it's stranger than the guess. The replay system was rebuilt around it in 2024. AI tags footage as it arrives so operators can pull a specific moment out of a race in seconds instead of hunting for it. It also generates interpolated frames, meaning it invents the in-between frames to make slow motion out of cameras that only ever shot at normal speed. Some of the slow-mo you watch was never filmed at that speed. There's also StatBot, which answers things like when a rookie last won a Grand Prix. That used to take an analyst up to ten minutes. Now it takes seconds. The scale underneath all of it: every car carries more than 300 sensors producing over 1.1 million data points a second. So the transition is most likely excellent camera work by a crew that does this every race weekend. The AI is back in the production truck, tagging and interpolating and answering questions, and almost nobody watching knows it's running. Follow @HyperbolicAI for more content on AI and technology.
