Description
When the power goes out while you're asleep or away and then comes back on, your freezer freezes everything again. The meat looks perfect. The clocks are blinking. And nothing tells you whether your food thawed. My father had a fix for that on our Minnesota farm. I still use it before every storm.
In this video I show you the frozen cup and coin trick: how to set it up the night before, how to read the coin on top, halfway down or at the bottom, and the five mistakes that make it lie to you. Then my father's three storm-day habits that go with it: the coldest setting, jugs of water in the empty spaces, and the note on the lid.
You'll also hear about the Storm of the Century in January 1975, the Halloween ice storm of 1991, the 2016 flood in Lumberton where the coin version spread, the Iowa derecho of August 2020, and the morning that little cup cost my father most of a year's meat.
Sources mentioned: USDA, NC State Extension, University of Nebraska Extension, Michigan State University Extension, Rhode Island Department of Health, National Institute on Aging, FDA (dry ice safety).
Never taste food to check if it's safe. When in doubt, throw it out. Handle dry ice only with gloves, in a ventilated space. This is general safety information, not medical advice.
