Description

If the power goes out this winter for three or four days, most of us won't go hungry because the pantry is empty. We'll go hungry because the food we have needs things we won't have: a working stove, spare water, a fridge, or a can opener we can manage in the dark. In this video I walk you through 15 pantry foods to stock before November, picked for older bodies. Every one keeps for months on a shelf, and most need no cooking at all: hard candy, honey, instant coffee and tea, crackers, dried fruit, applesauce cups, canned fruit in juice, shelf-stable milk, nuts, ready-to-serve soup, canned beans, chili and stew, canned tuna, chicken and salmon, peanut butter, and the number one item most folks our age have already seen in a doctor's office. You'll also learn the warning signs on a can that mean throw it out, where not to store your emergency cans in winter, how to cut the salt in canned food without wasting water, and which of these foods can interact with common medications like warfarin, water pills and blood pressure pills. Check dates, rotate what you store, and talk to your doctor about anything tied to your diet or medications. This is general information, not medical advice. Sources mentioned: USDA, CDC, FDA, Ready.gov. Which of these 15 is already in your pantry? Tell me in the comments. #pantry #winterprep #poweroutage
