Description

SAINT JUAN DIEGO | MESSENGER OF OUR LADY OF GUADALUPE | 9 December Discover the remarkable story of Saint Juan Diego, the humble Indigenous Catholic whose encounter with the Blessed Virgin Mary at Tepeyac became one of the most beloved events in Catholic tradition. In December 1531, Juan Diego was traveling to Mass when he encountered a radiant woman on the hill of Tepeyac. According to Catholic tradition, she identified herself as the Blessed Virgin Mary and asked that a church be built there. Juan carried her request to Bishop Juan de Zumárraga. After the bishop asked for a sign, Mary instructed Juan to gather flowers growing on the hill. Juan carried them inside his tilma to the bishop. When he opened the cloak, the flowers fell and the image now known as Our Lady of Guadalupe appeared upon the tilma. Juan Diego later lived a quiet life of prayer and service near the shrine at Tepeyac. He died in 1548. On July 31, 2002, Pope Saint John Paul II canonized Juan Diego at the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Mexico City. His feast day is celebrated on December 9. Saint Juan Diego reminds us that holiness does not depend upon wealth, status, or influence. God can call the humble and ordinary to accomplish extraordinary things. Saint Juan Diego, pray for us. ──────────────────────────── ABOUT 365 SAINTS IMAGINED 365 Saints Imagined brings Catholic saints, feast days, prayers, devotions, and Catholic Church history to life through original cinematic storytelling.
