Description

What is the most violent natural event in the universe? To answer that, we’re climbing a pyramid of cosmic violence — starting with lightning and volcanic eruptions on Earth, then moving through asteroid impacts, supernovae, magnetars, gamma-ray bursts, neutron star collisions and finally the merger of two black holes. At every step, the numbers become harder to comprehend. A supernova can outshine an entire galaxy, yet almost all of its energy escapes through invisible neutrinos. A magnetar flare from the far side of the Milky Way was powerful enough to affect Earth’s ionosphere. Gamma-ray bursts can disturb our atmosphere from billions of light-years away. And the collision of two neutron stars can manufacture entire planets’ worth of heavy elements such as gold. But the summit is stranger than all of them. When two black holes merged in the event known as GW150914, roughly three times the mass of our Sun was converted into gravitational-wave energy. For a fraction of a second, its peak power exceeded the combined light output of every star in the observable universe. And yet the event produced no ordinary light. No explosion we could see. No sound traveling through space. Only a tiny distortion in spacetime — small enough that detecting it required measuring a change thousands of times smaller than a proton. The higher we climb through the pyramid of cosmic violence, the quieter the universe becomes. -- DISCUSSIONS & SOCIAL MEDIA Commercial Purposes: [email protected] Tik Tok: https://www.tiktok.com/@insanecuriosity Reddit: https://www.reddit.com/user/insanecuriosity Instagram: https://instagram.com/insanecuriositythereal Twitter: https://twitter.com/insanecurio Facebook: https://facebook.com/InsaneCuriosity Linkedin: https://www.linkedin.com/in/insane-curiosity-46b928277/ Our Website: https://insanecuriosity.com/ -- Credits: Ron Miller, Mark A.
