Description

Nobody has ever taken a photograph of the Milky Way from the outside. The famous spiral image you’ve seen in textbooks, museums and online is a scientific reconstruction created from measurements made while we are trapped inside the galaxy we are trying to map. And for more than a century, that perspective caused astronomers to get some surprisingly basic things wrong. In this documentary, we follow the long attempt to discover what the Milky Way actually looks like: from William and Caroline Herschel’s first star counts, to Harlow Shapley’s discovery that the Sun is nowhere near the galactic center, to the interstellar dust that hid most of our galaxy from visible-light telescopes. Then came radio astronomy, infrared telescopes like Spitzer, and ESA’s Gaia mission — allowing astronomers to map the Milky Way using not only light, but the motions of billions of stars. What emerged is much messier than the clean spiral shown in illustrations. Astronomers still debate how many major spiral arms the Milky Way has. The galactic disc is warped. Nearby star-forming regions ride an enormous wave. And evidence suggests ancient collisions may have dramatically reshaped — and perhaps even flipped — our galaxy. We live inside the Milky Way. But reconstructing what our own home actually looks like remains one of astronomy’s strangest mapping problems. -- DISCUSSIONS & SOCIAL MEDIA Commercial Purposes: [email protected] Tik Tok: https://www.tiktok.com/@insanecuriosity Reddit: https://www.reddit.com/user/insanecuriosity Instagram: https://instagram.com/insanecuriositythereal Twitter: https://twitter.com/insanecurio Facebook: https://facebook.com/InsaneCuriosity Linkedin: https://www.linkedin.com/in/insane-curiosity-46b928277/ Our Website: https://insanecuriosity.com/ -- Credits: Ron Miller, Mark A.
