Description

My grandmother taught me to look at what was already in the kitchen before buying more. That lesson comes back to me every time I see a large bag of potatoes on sale. It’s only a bargain if you can use them before they spoil. If you’ve opened a bag to find sprouts, wrinkles, or a damp potato underneath, I’ll show you how to give the next batch a better chance through winter. Start by sorting them. Firm potatoes with sound skins can go into storage. Set damaged ones aside to inspect for a meal soon, and throw out potatoes that are rotten or extensively green. Freshly dug potatoes need another step before long storage: curing. A bag from the shop may already have had that preparation, so don’t automatically leave it somewhere warm for two weeks. Once the potatoes are ready, the important question is whether your storage space is actually cool enough. Put a thermometer there. Aim for a dark, ventilated place around 40–46°F (4–8°C), with humid air but no water sitting on the potatoes. A few things I won’t budge on: check the supply regularly and remove potatoes that are deteriorating. Don’t rely on cooking to make a badly green or heavily sprouted potato suitable to eat. And if your only space is a warm cupboard, buy a smaller bag next time. There’s no waste in being honest about what your home can store. Now tell me: where do you keep your potatoes, and have you ever checked the temperature there? A “cool basement” can mean something different in every house. If you store onions through winter too, watch my onion video next. They need their own arrangement. Subscribe, and I’ll keep sharing the household methods that help us use the food we buy. #potatoes #potatostorage #foodstorage #cucinapovera #italiangrandmother #reducefoodwaste #kitchentips
