Description

My grandmother took the green tops off carrots as soon as they came into her kitchen. She didn’t have a name for “humidity control.” She just knew that a carrot left to dry out was food we’d paid for and wouldn’t get to eat. If you’ve pulled a rubbery carrot from the crisper a week after buying it, I’ll show you what to do when you bring the next bag home. The trick is to keep whole carrots cold without letting the refrigerator’s dry air pull the moisture out of them. Tops off the day you buy them. Leave the carrots unwashed until you’re ready to use them. Then choose one of two methods: put them in a sealed container with a dry paper towel, or cover them completely with cold water in a lidded jar. If you use water, check it every four to five days and replace it when it turns cloudy. One more thing I won’t skip: keep those carrots away from apples and other ripening fruit. They can make carrots taste bitter even when the carrots still look fine. This is for whole, unpeeled carrots. Stored well, they can stay crisp and usable for about a month; peeled or cut carrots won’t last as long. Now tell me—did your family keep carrots in a jar, a drawer, or somewhere else entirely? I like hearing what different kitchens taught us. Next time, we’re talking about potatoes and why so many of us put them in the wrong place. Subscribe, and I’ll keep showing you the little household methods that help us use the food we buy. #carrots #foodstorage #kitchentips #cucinapovera #reducefoodwaste #italiangrandmother
