Description

My grandmother hung garlic where the air could reach every bulb. When she needed a clove, she took one from the braid. She didn’t leave a pile in a bowl beside the stove and hope it would last. If the garlic on your counter is already sprouting or turning soft, I’ll show you what to check before you store the next batch. Start with firm bulbs and dry, papery skins. Softneck garlic keeps longer than hardneck when the conditions are right. Give the bulbs air in a braid, mesh bag, or slatted crate, and find them a cool, dark, dry place away from the stove. That can carry good garlic through many months. If you want to keep some for cooking closer to a full year, freeze a portion while it’s still in good condition. I’ll show you the ways to prepare it so you can take out what you need. One thing I won’t budge on: **do not leave fresh garlic submerged in oil on the counter or a pantry shelf.** It may look preserved, but homemade garlic in oil at room temperature carries a botulism risk. If you make garlic in oil for longer storage, freeze it immediately. Now tell me—where did your family keep garlic? Did someone braid it, hang it in a bag, or have a spot in the pantry that always seemed to work? I like hearing the little systems people learned at home. Next time: onions. They’re living bulbs too, and the place you store them makes more difference than you might think. Subscribe, and I’ll keep showing you how to use the food you buy instead of watching it go to waste. #garlic #garlicstorage #foodpreservation #cucinapovera #italiankitchen #reducefoodwaste #kitchentips
