Description

The Austin Yogurt Shop Murders remained one of Texas's most infamous cold cases for more than three decades. Four teenage girls were killed inside an Austin yogurt shop in 1991, and although four men were eventually accused, the DNA evidence would ultimately point investigators toward someone else. Decades later, advances in cold case DNA testing produced a major breakthrough. DNA preserved from beneath Amy Ayers' fingernails was matched to Robert Eugene Brashers, a violent offender who had never been one of the original suspects. Investigators also reexamined a .380 cartridge casing recovered from the crime scene. Improved ballistics testing connected the evidence to another homicide and added another piece to the decades-old mystery. But there was one extraordinary problem: Brashers had already been dead for more than 25 years. In this episode of Caught By Forensics, we examine the Austin Yogurt Shop Murders, the DNA evidence, ballistics breakthrough, wrongly accused suspects, and the forensic evidence that finally changed this 34-year-old cold case.
