Description

A cold case DNA breakthrough identified a suspect nearly 40 years after Ruby Battee was murdered inside her Dallas, Texas home. On May 27, 1986, 46-year-old Ruby Battee was sexually assaulted and murdered after someone forced their way into her home. Investigators preserved biological evidence from the crime scene, but DNA technology at the time couldn't provide the answer detectives needed. The case eventually went cold. Nearly four decades later, Dallas homicide detectives returned to the preserved evidence. Modern testing produced a partial male DNA profile, which investigators entered into CODIS. In May 2026, the system returned a name: Marvin Lee Holloway. But there was another stunning development—Holloway was already behind bars serving a life sentence for the separate 1988 murder of his coworker, Emily Proctor. Detectives obtained a fresh DNA sample from Holloway and later secured a murder warrant in connection with Ruby's death. Exactly 40 years after Ruby Battee was killed, Dallas Police publicly announced the breakthrough. Holloway was charged with capital murder. He has not been convicted in Ruby Battee's death, and the case must still be resolved through the legal process. In this episode of Caught By Forensics, we examine the Ruby Battee cold case, the decades-old DNA evidence that survived, the CODIS match that finally gave detectives a name, and how advances in forensic science reopened a murder investigation nearly four decades later. The evidence had been there since 1986. Why did it take 40 years for science to reveal whose DNA it was? Subscribe to Caught By Forensics for more cold cases involving DNA evidence, forensic science, genetic genealogy, digital evidence, and clues that survived long after investigations went cold. #truecrimestory #coldcases #dnaevidence Business Contact: [email protected]
