But when scientists compared the DNA, the real dividing lines of South India turned out to be somewhere nobody expected. We count down seven comparisons between Malayalis and Tamils: how Malayalam grew out of early Tamil and why a Tamil epic was written by a Chera prince; the Western Ghats wall and the Palakkad Gap; the sea trade of Muziris, Calicut and Kochi, and how little ancestry it actually left; Kerala's matrilineal tharavads versus Tamil family lines; the forest peoples of the Ghats and Nilgiris; the three ancient ancestral layers inside both; and a #1 that changes how you see every border in India. A note on accuracy: many genetic studies of South India group communities into broad categories, and not every community in Kerala or Tamil Nadu has been studied in detail, so the patterns described are broad. The dating of Malayalam's separation from Tamil is debated by linguists. Communities with traditions of foreign origin may carry small amounts of outside ancestry, but data for many is limited. No community, caste, religion or region is ranked above another. Be careful with "Tamil %", "Malayali %" or "Aryan / Dravidian %" results from hobbyist calculators; they are not peer-reviewed.
