One Sri Lankan cricketer carries six names: a title of the sun, a royal honour, a saint and a Portuguese surname. Every Sri Lankan surname is a map like that. And the most common names on the island are not Sinhala or Tamil at all.
We count down seven groups of Sri Lankan surnames: the Malays brought from Java by the Dutch; Burgher names like Jansz and Kelaart, and the surprising Ondaatje story; the Moors' Marikar, Lebbe and Cassim and the legend of Arab traders; Jaffna Tamil names and the hill country Tamils; the Sinhala "ge" house names like Mudiyanselage and Liyanage; royal and noble names from Bandara and Dissanayake to Bandaranaike and the last Nayak kings of Kandy; and a #1 carried by millions of families that changes how you see a Sri Lankan phone book.
A note on accuracy: genetic research on specific Sri Lankan communities, especially Burghers, Malays and individual castes, is still limited, so in places we describe broad patterns or what genetics would predict rather than precise measurements. Family origin stories, including the Bandaranaike and Ondaatje traditions, are presented as family history, not genetic proof. No community, faith or caste is ranked above another. Be careful with "Portuguese %", "Arab %" or "Aryan %" results from hobbyist calculators; they are not peer-reviewed.
