Ancient DNA shows they never fully did. In this documentary, we follow the genetic story of the Haitian people from the first Archaic settlers of the Caribbean, roughly 6,000 years ago, to the Ceramic Age ancestors of the Taíno, who arrived from northeastern South America. We look at what ancient genomes reveal about the Taíno world, why its ancestry still survives across the Caribbean today, and how Saint-Domingue drew people from across West and West Central Africa, from Senegambia to the Kingdom of Kongo. We also cover the Haitian Revolution, the Polish soldiers of Cazale, Levantine migration, and what a DNA test can and cannot tell a Haitian person about their roots. Accuracy note: Very few ancient genomes come from Haitian soil itself; most ancient Caribbean DNA comes from the Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, Cuba, the Bahamas and the Lesser Antilles. Native American ancestry among Haitians is generally low. No published genetic study has confirmed Polish ancestry in Cazale.
