When scientists tested the bones, 40–50% of the ancestry came from South Asia. That single skeleton, from the Vat Komnou cemetery at Angkor Borei, rewrote the story of how Indian culture reached Southeast Asia. We follow every layer of Khmer ancestry: the Hoabinhian hunter-gatherers, the farmers who came south from China with rice and the Austroasiatic languages, and the South Asians who arrived by sea in the age of Funan — a thousand years earlier than anyone expected. Plus the legend of Kaundinya and Soma, and what it all means for Angkor Wat. A note on accuracy: the headline finding rests on a single ancient individual, and tropical conditions make ancient DNA very hard to recover in Southeast Asia. The 40–50% figure applies to that child, not to Cambodians generally; modern Cambodians carry a far smaller South Asian component, and published estimates vary by method. Southern India is a plausible proxy for the source, not a proven point of origin. Be careful with exact ancestry percentages online; many come from hobbyist calculators, not peer-reviewed studies.
