Description
Why do the Falkland Islands belong to Britain even though Argentina, Spain and France all claimed them? π¬π§π¦π·πͺπΈπ«π· The Falkland Islands have been disputed for centuries. Britain established a settlement in 1765, but the French had already settled on the islands a year earlier π¬π§π«π· After the Spanish Empire began to collapse, the United Provinces of the RΓo de la Plata, the future Argentina, claimed the Falkland Islands as former Spanish territory. Britain returned in 1833 and took control again. From then on Britain maintained control of the Falkland Islands and British settlers established a permanent community there. Port Stanley became the capital and an important port for ships sailing through the Drake Passage and Strait of Magellan β For almost 150 years the islands remained under British administration π¬π§ Then in 1982 Argentina invaded the Falkland Islands, starting the Falklands War. Margaret Thatcher sent a British fleet nearly 8,000 miles across the Atlantic and after 74 days of fighting Britain retook the islands βοΈ The Falkland Islands remain a British Overseas Territory today. In the 2013 referendum 99.8% of voters chose to remain British π¬π§
