Description

R.C. Sproul draws on Augustine's idea of gravitas to describe something Christian worship desperately needs: a sense of the weightiness of God. Entering His presence should be marked by reverence, adoration, and an awareness of the majesty of the One being worshiped. Sproul illustrates the point with a story about Babe Ruth meeting the King of England. Despite being instructed in royal protocol beforehand, Ruth reportedly entered the king's presence with an extremely casual greeting. Sproul's point is not ultimately about royal etiquette. Ruth treated the king lightly because he failed to sense the gravity of whose presence he had entered. The same danger exists in Christian worship. When the majesty and holiness of God are forgotten, familiarity can become casualness. True worship recognizes the incomparable weight and glory of the God before whom the church has gathered.
