Description

Did Adam and Eve have free will before the Fall? R.C. Sproul explores the difference between humanity's original freedom and the condition of fallen man. Before the Fall, Adam and Eve were not in bondage to sin and had the ability to choose between good and evil. But what about human beings after the Fall? Sproul explains that the Fall did not destroy the human will or our ability to make choices. Rather, humanity lost the freedom to incline itself toward the things of God. Fallen people still choose according to their desires, but their sinful nature leaves them unable to choose spiritual good in their natural condition. Drawing on Augustine and John Calvin, Sproul distinguishes between the ability to choose what we want and the spiritual freedom humanity lost through sin. This distinction is essential to understanding the biblical doctrine of sin and the human condition. The question is not simply whether we have a will, but whether our fallen wills are free from the bondage of sin. As Sproul explains, understanding this difference helps clarify why humanity needs God's grace and why the doctrine of the Fall matters.
