Description

R.C. Sproul explains the distinction between the active and passive obedience of Jesus Christ and why both are essential to understanding the gospel. Christ did not merely die for the sins of His people. Throughout His entire earthly life, He actively obeyed the will and law of God perfectly. In His passive obedience, Christ willingly suffered and died as the sacrificial Lamb, bearing the sin and guilt of His people. In His active obedience, He fulfilled everything that Adam failed to do, obeying the Father perfectly from beginning to end. His righteousness was not something He needed for Himself—it becomes the righteousness of those who belong to Him. The distinction is central to the doctrine of justification. Christ not only takes our sin upon Himself; His perfect righteousness is counted as ours. The obedience of the second Adam accomplishes what the first Adam failed to do, bringing sinners safely home to God.
