Description

When does obedience to God become legalism? John MacArthur responds to a Christian who fears that pursuing holiness, reading Scripture daily, and turning away from sin might mean trying to earn God's favor. MacArthur rejects the idea that a desire to obey God's Word is legalistic, explaining that genuine conversion produces new desires and a longing to honor Christ. Legalism is not the pursuit of holiness, but the belief that we can earn our salvation through our own works. MacArthur warns that calling the pursuit of obedience legalism can lead to the opposite error: treating God's grace as an excuse for disobedience. Christians are not saved by their obedience, but a transformed life begins to reflect the character and commands of Christ. MacArthur also explains how sin affects the believer's relationship with God. Disobedience does not undo salvation, but it can rob Christians of the joy of their fellowship with God, trouble their conscience, and weaken their assurance. Drawing on David's prayer in Psalm 51, he emphasizes the difference between losing salvation and losing the joy of salvation.
