Description
🏚️ Hidden beneath suburban Condell Park in Sydney lies one of the city’s most extraordinary surviving relics of the Second World War — the Bankstown Bunker, a secret underground Air Defence Headquarters built to help protect New South Wales from possible attack.
In this episode of Shadowed Secrets, I uncover the history of this remarkable wartime complex, from its construction beneath Black Charlie’s Hill to its role tracking aircraft, coordinating air defences and receiving information from radar stations, observer posts and military installations across New South Wales.
✈️ Inside this underground headquarters, RAAF and WAAAF personnel worked around the clock in a network of corridors, communications rooms and specialised operations areas centred around an enormous two-storey Operations Room and plotting table.
After the war, the bunker was closed, briefly reused, rediscovered in 1971 and later devastated by fire. As housing spread across Condell Park, the huge reinforced concrete structure was buried beneath landscaped open space and largely disappeared from public view.
For decades, most people passing through the area would never have known what remained beneath their feet.
But while making this film… something unexpected happened. 👀
A friend and I were given an opportunity to go underground and see what still survives inside the Bankstown Bunker.
What we found was incredible.
🔦 Dark concrete corridors
🏚️ Large underground rooms
🌬️ Original ventilation and air-conditioning equipment
🚽 Old amenities and toilets
🔥 Fire-blackened concrete
✍️ Graffiti dating back decades
🕳️ Rooms and passageways hidden beneath suburban Sydney
After spending days researching this place through wartime photographs, newspaper reports, plans and historical records, suddenly we were standing inside the same underground headquarters we had been following throughout the story.
More than 80 years after it was constructed, much of the Bankstown Bunker is still there.
Silent.
Dark.
And hidden beneath Condell Park.
🎬 Join me as we explore the history, mystery and surviving remains of one of Sydney’s most fascinating forgotten wartime sites.
