Description

🏚️ Old Sydney Town — Inside the Lost Colonial City After 23 Years For almost three decades, Old Sydney Town at Somersby on the NSW Central Coast transported millions of visitors back to the earliest days of colonial Sydney. Opened on Australia Day in 1975, this remarkable historical attraction recreated the streets, cottages, workshops, gaol, taverns, church and waterfront of early Sydney. For generations of Australian children, it became an unforgettable school excursion — filled with redcoat soldiers, convicts, cannon fire, blacksmiths, candle dipping, bullock wagons and colonial demonstrations. 🇦🇺 Then, on 3 January 2003, Old Sydney Town closed its gates. More than two decades later, we’re going back inside. 🚶 In this episode of Shadowed Secrets, we follow the same journey visitors once made through the entrance tunnel and into the abandoned streets beyond. Using historical photographs, maps and the memories of former visitors, we explore the story of how Old Sydney Town was created, what made it so memorable, why it struggled financially, and what eventually led to its closure. 🌿 Today, nature is slowly reclaiming the town. Cottages are deteriorating, workshops sit silent, the recreated Sydney Cove is disappearing and buildings once filled with visitors now stand empty. But much of Old Sydney Town is still here. The gaol. The pottery. The blacksmith. The remains of St Philips Church. The old streets. And towering above everything… the enormous military windmill. For the estimated six million people who visited Old Sydney Town, this place became much more than a tourist attraction. For many, it was where Australian history first came alive. 🎬 And this is only Part One. In Part Two, we’ll venture deeper inside the surviving buildings, forgotten rooms and abandoned remains of Old Sydney Town — including a journey high inside that incredible old windmill. 🔔 Subscribe to Shadowed Secrets for more forgotten Australian history, abandoned places, lost buildings and stories hiding in plain sight. #OldSydneyTown #Somersby #AustralianHistory #NSWHistory #CentralCoastNSW #AbandonedAustralia #LostSydney #SydneyHistory #ForgottenHistory #UrbanExploration #HistoricAustralia #ShadowedSecrets
