Description

🏚️ THE OLD TOLL BAR & WELCOME INN — MOUNT VICTORIA 🐎 Beside the busy Great Western Highway at Mount Victoria stands a small sandstone building that has watched travellers cross the Blue Mountains for generations. But this little building was once part of a much bigger story. 👀 Long before cars and trucks travelled through Mount Victoria, this was the Mount Victoria Toll Bar — a place where horses, livestock, carts and coaches could be charged for using the road west. Beside it once stood the Welcome Inn, providing food, drink and shelter to travellers making the long journey across the mountains. 🍺🏚️ During the gold rush, this road became a highway to opportunity. Gold seekers, bullock wagons, coaches and horsemen passed the toll bar on their way west — while bushrangers waited along isolated stretches of road for travellers carrying money and valuables. 💰🐎 In this episode of Shadowed Secrets, we uncover the history of Mount Victoria’s old toll house and the lost Welcome Inn, including the story of George Sheppeard, an 1862 bushranger incident near Victoria Pass, the arrival of the motor car, and the moment the historic toll house itself was threatened with demolition. 📜 We’ll also compare historic photographs with Mount Victoria today to see if traces of the old Welcome Inn property may still survive. The Welcome Inn was demolished in 1947. But remarkably, the old sandstone toll house remains — still standing beside the road it once helped pay for. 🎥 Join me as we explore another forgotten chapter in the history of Mount Victoria and the Blue Mountains, New South Wales. 👍 If you enjoy forgotten Australian history, lost buildings and exploring places where traces of the past still remain, please consider liking the video and subscribing to Shadowed Secrets. #MountVictoria #BlueMountains #AustralianHistory #NSWHistory #ForgottenHistory #LostHistory #HistoricNSW #BlueMountainsHistory #Bushrangers #GoldRush #GreatWesternHighway #ShadowedSecrets
