Description

🏚️ Inside Old Sydney Town — What Remains After 23 Years More than 23 years after Old Sydney Town closed its gates, we’re going back inside — exploring the forgotten rooms, cottages, kitchens, workshops and buildings that once brought this remarkable recreation of colonial Sydney to life. In Part One, we walked the streets of Old Sydney Town, explored its history and heard the memories of the millions of people who once visited. This time, we’re going through the doors. 🚪 🍽️ Old menus and prices still remain on the walls. 🔥 The blacksmith’s enormous bellows still sit beside the forge. 🏺 The pottery kiln still stands. 🪵 Furniture, barrels and equipment remain scattered throughout the buildings. ⛓️ We step inside the old gaol. ⚙️ And finally, we climb through the military windmill to discover its incredible wooden machinery and enormous gears still surviving high above the town. But what remains at Old Sydney Town isn’t only found inside its abandoned buildings. Former visitors still remember the smell of wood fires, boiled sweets, candle making, the Town Crier, marching redcoats, musket fire, escaping convicts, school excursions and the famous performances that made the town feel alive. Those memories form an important part of this journey. Opened in 1975 and closed on 3 January 2003, Old Sydney Town introduced generations of Australians to a recreated version of early colonial Sydney. Today, the streets are silent. The buildings are deteriorating. But traces of the attraction — and the memories it created — are still here. 🎥 Join me as we step inside Old Sydney Town and discover what remains after more than 23 years. If you visited Old Sydney Town, I’d love to hear your memories in the comments.
