🔗 Save $6,000 A Year with My Complete Amish Home-Saving Method I teach: https://eliasyoder.com Wait for the afternoon when the sun comes in low and lies flat across your floor, then look along the bottom of the wall. There it is. A soft grey line running the whole length of the room, thicker in the corners, gathered on the ledge of the trim like a shelf of ash. And you cleaned that. You were on your knees with a rag and a bucket in the spring and your back told you about it for three days. It was back by June. That dust is not falling onto your baseboard. It is being held there. My grandfather showed me what was going on with a lamp chimney when I was eight. I was sweeping the shop and annoyed because the fine dust would not leave the wall. It was stuck to the boards, standing on them sideways, and the broom went past and took nothing. He took the glass chimney off the lamp, rubbed it hard on his sleeve, and held it a hand's width above a little pile of sawdust on the bench. The sawdust jumped up at it. I asked how he had done that. He said he had not done anything to the sawdust at all. He had only done something to the glass. What we go through: Why your walls and trim carry a charge, and why it is worse in winter Why the line comes back so fast: you remove the dust and leave the magnet What fabric softener actually is underneath the perfume The broom, the towel and the rubber band, and why your knees never touch the floor Why damp beats dry, and why a feather duster moves dust rather than removing it Doing the vents properly, which is the dirtiest thing in most houses Working top to bottom, and why the job never feels finished otherwise The plastic bag on the broom head for hair, which is the best trick here Where house dust actually comes from, which is not what you have been told The limits, and all four matter. One spoon, not three, because a thin film sheds dust and a thick one catches it, and if it feels tacky when dry you used too much. Keep it off floors entirely because it is slippery, off flat chalky paint because it can shine in patches, and off anything you eat from. It is a film and films build up, so once a year take the lot off with plain water and a little dish soap and start again. And the plain truth about what it achieves. It does not end dust. It slows it down a great deal. A baseboard treated this way stays clean for two or three months rather than three or four weeks. That is an enormous difference and it is the real claim, and anybody telling you the dust is gone for good is telling you a story. What matters more than any of it is reducing what is in the air to begin with. Shoes off at the door, mats inside and out, and the filter changed on anything that moves air, because in a house with forced air most of the dust goes round and round through that one square of material. Tonight, do one room. Wrap the towel on the broom, one spoonful in the bucket, and walk that room standing up. Then unwrap the towel and hold it to the light. Tell me in the comments what colour that towel came out. And if you have told me your county before, tell me instead whether you have a dog or a cat in the house, because I have a notion those towels come out a different colour entirely. Next time we go back outside and down, because a well with no power in it is not a dead well. I gathered the whole of it into a book at eliasyoder dot com. The people who built this country with their hands knew that, and we are only just starting to remember it. #EliasYoder #CleaningTips #Dust #Baseboards #StaticElectricity #FabricSoftener #HouseholdTips #OldWays #SelfReliance #Homesteading #Frugal #DeepClean #DIY #Housekeeping #Winter
