Description

Legolas, Gandalf, and the Balrog of Moria — why does the Wood-elf name Durin's Bane before the wizard does, and why is the Bridge of Khazad-dûm the only moment in the entire War of the Ring where Tolkien gives Legolas naked, unmistakable terror? This Lord of the Rings deep dive tracks a small, strange detail in the book that Peter Jackson's film quietly rewrites. We line up the two versions: in the film, Gandalf calls it — "a Balrog, a demon of the ancient world" — and the Fellowship runs. In the book, Legolas cries the name first, and Gandalf answers, "A Balrog! Now I understand." A Wood-elf of Mirkwood, a Sindarin prince of Thranduil's people, who as far as anything Tolkien wrote never met a Balrog in his life, identifies one of Morgoth's Maiar in a single heartbeat — while the wizard, a Maia himself, has just admitted he cannot guess what stood beyond the door. We walk through what Elven tradition remembers: Gothmog Lord of Balrogs, the Fall of Gondolin, Ecthelion of the Fountain, and Glorfindel — who died fighting a Balrog and was re-embodied and sent back, and who sat in the same council chamber as Legolas at Rivendell only months before Moria. Plus the version warning on the vivid Book of Lost Tales details, and how Tolkien uses Legolas's later Lórien memory — a place he had never been, sung about anyway — as the model for how an immortal people carry a history they never witnessed. Sources: The Fellowship of the Ring ("A Journey in the Dark," "The Bridge of Khazad-dûm," "Lothlórien"), The Silmarillion, and Tolkien's later writings on Glorfindel. Why do you think Legolas named it first?
