Description

Aragorn's song, Beren and Lúthien, and the two words Aragorn gives Frodo in the Midgewater Marshes — this Lord of the Rings deep dive opens the deleted-feeling Extended Edition scene straight out of Tolkien, and follows the lay through four verses: the First Age legend, Aragorn's own bloodline, his first meeting with Arwen, and the Yorkshire wood where Tolkien himself first saw it. We walk the whole story. The scene the Extended cut moves to the marsh and renders in Sindarin — originally staged at Weathertop in the book, in the Common Speech, in a mode called ann-thennath. Beren the mortal Man, Lúthien Tinúviel the daughter of Thingol and the Maia Melian, the Silmaril cut from Morgoth's crown, the wolf Carcharoth, Beren slain, Lúthien's song moving Mandos, and her choice of mortality to go back with him. The second verse — the bloodline — Dior, Elwing, Elrond and Elros, the kings of Númenor, down to Aragorn, and Arwen descending the same way. The Ring of Barahir passing from the First Age all the way to Arwen's hand. The three great unions of the Eldar and the Edain. The third verse — Appendix A's account of the twenty-one-year-old Estel, newly told who he is, singing part of the Lay of Lúthien in the woods of Rivendell when Arwen appears before him and he cries Tinúviel. The Evenstar echo of Lúthien's twilight name. And the fourth verse, outside the book entirely: Edith Bratt, Yorkshire 1917, hemlocks in a small wooded glade, the dance Tolkien remembered in Letter #340, the parenthesis in his own hand — "(and knew she was) my Lúthien" — and the shared grave in Wolvercote Cemetery, where the stones read Beren and Lúthien. Sources: The Fellowship of the Ring ("A Knife in the Dark"), Appendix A ("The Tale of Aragorn and Arwen"), The Silmarillion ("Of Beren and Lúthien"), The Lays of Beleriand (Lay of Leithian), and Tolkien's Letters (especially #340).
