Description

Sauron's return, the Necromancer, and the White Council — where was Sauron for the 2,500 years the Ring was lost, and why did the wisest beings in Middle-earth take eighteen hundred years to say his name out loud? This Lord of the Rings deep dive tracks the full Third Age timeline the films step over in a single prologue line, straight out of Tolkien's appendices. We walk the gap year by year: 1050, when a shadow falls on Greenwood the Great and the forest becomes Mirkwood, and the thing in Dol Guldur gets a name — the Necromancer. 1100, when the Wise identify the fortress and conclude it is a Nazgûl, not their master. 2063, Gandalf's first entry into Dol Guldur, and Sauron's defining move: he flees east rather than be identified. The four-century Watchful Peace that follows — the longest stretch of the gap, and the stretch where the Wise think the gap is closed. 2463, the year Galadriel founds the White Council and Déagol pulls the One Ring from a river in the exact same year. 2850, when Gandalf finally confirms the Necromancer is Sauron. 2851, the vote the whole timeline turns on — Saruman overruling Gandalf's attack because he wants the Ring to reveal itself under Sauron's pressure. The ninety years of waiting that follow. The White Council's "victory" at Dol Guldur in 2941 — one year before Sauron returns in secret to Mordor, to a house the Nazgûl have spent nine hundred years preparing. And the final meeting in 2953, where Saruman tells the Council the Ring is lost at Sea, twelve years after it reached Bag End. Plus how Peter Jackson's Hobbit trilogy stages the one scene the films DO give you. ARTWORK & ARTIST CREDITS This channel is built on the work of incredibly talented Middle-earth artists, and I want every one of them credited. Tracking down the original creator of a piece is often genuinely hard — art gets reposted, renamed, and separated from its source all across the internet.
