Description
Sauron, Eönwë, and the moment Tolkien's darkest villain almost turned back — did the future Dark Lord of Mordor genuinely repent at the end of the First Age? This Lord of the Rings deep dive opens one of the strangest, most-overlooked passages in The Silmarillion, where Tolkien himself leaves the door open on real repentance.
We walk the scene straight out of the text. Who Sauron had been before — a Maia of Aulë the smith, a craftsman-spirit whose seed of corruption was a love of order so complete it needed everyone bent to his will. His First Age résumé under Morgoth: Tol-in-Gaurhoth, the Isle of Werewolves, the death of Finrod, shapes of wolf and vampire. The War of Wrath, the fall of Thangorodrim, and the end of everything he served. Then the scene the films cannot touch: Sauron adopting a fair form again and coming before Eönwë, the herald of Manwë, abjuring his evil deeds — and the sentence Tolkien chooses on purpose, that "some held his submission was not at first falsely done," that he truly repented, if only out of fear. Eönwë's authority to pardon one of his own order, the road west, and the thing that stopped him: humiliation. The possible long years of servitude in Aman to prove his good faith, and the pride that chose five hundred years of hiding in Middle-earth instead. Plus the darker irony — the craftsman who refused to submit then spent two Ages inventing instruments of submission for everyone else: the Rings, the Nazgûl, Númenor's fall from within.
Sources: The Silmarillion ("Of the Rings of Power and the Third Age," "Akallabêth," "Of Beren and Lúthien"), and the Valaquenta.
Do you think Sauron's repentance was real? Let me know in the comments.

ARTWORK & ARTIST CREDITS
This channel is built on the work of incredibly talented Middle-earth artists, and I want every one of them credited. Tracking down the original creator of a piece is often genuinely hard — art gets reposted, renamed, and separated from its source all across the internet. If your work appears in this video and you'd like a credit added, corrected, or your piece removed, just email me and I'll take care of it right away. Your wishes always come first.
