Description
The Nazgûl, the Nine Rings, and the Witch-king of Angmar — what did Sauron's rings actually take from the mortal men who wore them, and why are the Ringwraiths so hard to destroy by ordinary force? This Lord of the Rings deep dive opens the mechanism Peter Jackson's films never pause to explain, straight out of The Silmarillion, The Lord of the Rings, and Unfinished Tales.
We walk the fall step by step. Nine Rings of Power given to mortal Men — Númenórean lords and the Easterling Khamûl among them — the only Ringwraith Tolkien gives us a personal name for. Kings, sorcerers and warriors made mighty in their day, gaining glory, wealth and unnaturally prolonged life. Tolkien's own line that turns the gift inside out: "they had, as it seemed, unending life — yet life became unendurable to them." Walking unseen beneath the sun. Seeing the phantoms and delusions Sauron fed them. Falling one by one under the Rings and through them under his domination, until they faded into permanent inhabitants of the Unseen. Where the Nine Rings actually are by the Third Age — the inconsistency between Gandalf's "the Nine the Nazgûl keep" and the later, repeated conception that Sauron himself held them. The pale, haggard figures Frodo sees at Weathertop when he puts the One Ring on. The Morgul-knife that was turning him into one of them. The Witch-king's end on the Pelennor at the hands of Merry and Éowyn. And the final eight racing to Mount Doom at the instant Sauron realises where the Ring is, caught in the firestorm when Orodruin erupts.
Sources: The Silmarillion ("Of the Rings of Power and the Third Age"), The Lord of the Rings (Council of Elrond, "A Knife in the Dark," "The Battle of the Pelennor Fields"), and Unfinished Tales ("The Hunt for the Ring").
What do you think the Nine were offered to accept Sauron's rings? Let me know in the comments.

ARTWORK & ARTIST CREDITS
This channel is built on the work of incredibly talented Middle-earth artists, and I want every one of them credited. Tracking down the original creator of a piece is often genuinely hard — art gets reposted, renamed, and separated from its source all across the internet. If your work appears in this video and you'd like a credit added, corrected, or your piece removed, just email me and I'll take care of it right away. Your wishes always come first.
