Description

Radagast the Brown, Gandalf's rescue from Orthanc, and the one wizard Tolkien quietly judged — "bird-tamer, simple, fool," as Saruman sneered, or the honest brown wizard whose errand saved the only Istar Tolkien counted faithful? This Lord of the Rings deep dive opens every surviving line Tolkien wrote about Radagast, straight out of The Fellowship of the Ring, Unfinished Tales, and the 1954 Istari essay. We put him on trial charge by charge. Who he was before the mission — Aiwendil the Lover of Birds, pressed on Saruman at the Valar's council because Yavanna begged for him, "obliged" to be taken from day one. His arrival around 3000 of the Third Age in the shape of an old man in earthen brown. The first charge, bird-tamer — Aiwendil, Rhosgobel, the master of shapes and colours whose friends were the beasts. The second charge, simple — Midsummer 3018 on the Greenway, carrying Saruman's trap-summons in good faith and bringing Gandalf his warning about the Nine. The request Gandalf makes before they part: send all the news you can, by beast and bird, to Orthanc. Saruman imprisons Gandalf on July 10th. On September 18th, Gwaihir arrives with news — because Radagast did literally the one thing he had been asked to do. The honest wizard who walked Gandalf into the trap also, without knowing it, got him out. The third charge, fool — Tolkien's gentler verdict in a note printed by Hammond and Scull: not proud and domineering, but neglectful and easygoing, drawn to the beasts because they were easier company than Elves and Men. And the piece Tolkien never finished: Rhosgobel spoken of in the past tense before anyone checked, and after the Council, scouts find Radagast simply not there. Plus the strange late identification of Hrávandil, one of five Maiar sent to Cuiviénen to guard the first Elves. Sources: The Fellowship of the Ring (Council of Elrond), The Hobbit, Unfinished Tales ("The Istari"), the 1954 Istari essay, Hammond & Scull's Reader's Companion, and Tolkien's late notes.
