Description

In the basalt rock cliffs of Maharashtra stands an architectural feat unlike any other: the Kailasa Temple at Ellora (Cave 16). Excavated in the 8th century under the Rashtrakuta dynasty, this monolithic temple was not assembled with cut stone blocks. Instead, ancient masons started at the summit of a solid basalt cliff and carved downwards, removing an estimated 200,000 tons of rock to reveal multi-story halls, towering pillars, and sculpted elephants. Because the entire complex is a single continuous rock excavation, every structural beam, courtyard, and relief sculpture had to be planned before the very first strike of a chisel.
