Description

In Vijayapura, Karnataka, stands Gol Gumbaz—the 17th-century mausoleum of Sultan Mohammed Adil Shah and home to one of the largest unsupported domes in the ancient world. Perched high inside the monumental chamber is the famous Whispering Gallery. The acoustic geometry of the circular stone dome is engineered so precisely that the softest whisper travels along the curved wall across 44 meters to be heard clearly on the opposite side. A single sharp sound made within the hall can reverberate distinctly up to 11 times. Without modern acoustic software, early Deccan builders turned raw masonry into an enduring masterclass in architectural physics.
