Description

In 1992, villagers in Zhejiang Province, China, decided to pump water out of several quiet ponds—and accidentally uncovered one of the most astonishing subterranean complexes in archaeological history: the Longyou Grottoes. Beneath the surface lie 24 massive hand-excavated sandstone caverns, descending up to 30 meters into the earth. Towering pillars support monumental vaulted ceilings, and virtually every square meter of wall and ceiling is etched with uniform, parallel 60-degree chisel grooves. An estimated one million cubic meters of solid rock were removed to create this underground world. Yet astonishingly, no known historical texts clearly record who built them, when they were carved, or what purpose they served. Were they ancient quarries, military depots, ceremonial chambers, or imperial shelters? Part 2 of our 7-part series: Secrets Carved in Stone.
