Description
Carved deep inside an ancient limestone quarry in Syracuse, Sicily, lies a colossal subterranean cavern with a singular shape: the Ear of Dionysius (Orecchio di Dionisio).
Stretching over 60 meters deep and towering 20 meters high, the chamber's curved S-shape acoustic geometry creates extreme natural sound amplification and reverberation.
According to ancient legend, the 4th-century BC tyrant Dionysius I of Syracuse utilized this quarry cavern as a prison. By listening at a small aperture near the ceiling, he was said to eavesdrop on the whispered plots and secrets of his captives below, as even the faintest rustle of clothing carried up the stone walls.
Whether engineered intentionally or the fortunate byproduct of ancient Greek limestone quarrying, this resonant chamber remains one of the Mediterranean's most intriguing acoustic wonders.
