Description
Deep inside the northern granite quarries of Aswan, Egypt, lies the largest known ancient monolith ever attempted by Egyptian builders: the Unfinished Obelisk.
Ordered during the 18th Dynasty (attributed to Queen Hatshepsut), it was carved directly into the red granite bedrock and would have stood 42 meters tall, weighing an estimated 1,200 tons—heavier than any obelisk successfully raised in antiquity.
Ancient quarrymen laboriously shaped the stone by pounding it by hand using spherical dolerite hammerstones, carving deep narrow trenches along its perimeter. But as the colossal stone was almost detached from the bedrock, a fatal stress fracture tore across the granite, forcing the entire project to be abandoned on the spot.
Frozen in stone for over 3,500 years, it remains our greatest archaeological window into ancient Egyptian megalithic engineering.
