The one carrying on, snorting and tossing its head and raking up the dirt, that fella is telling you to clear off. It's the one that goes dead quiet and squares up on you that's already made up its mind. Get those two round the wrong way and you're in strife, and most people do. I've spent the better part of my life with these animals, mustering feral water buffalo across the Top End floodplains and pulling scrub bulls out of the paperbarks. A big bull goes better than a tonne, carries horns past three metres tip to tip, and moves quicker than you'd ever credit something that size. There's a couple of hundred thousand of them across the north now, out there with the hikers, the hunters, the grey nomads and anyone who took a wrong turn off the bitumen. Near enough all of them want nothing to do with you. This one's about reading the odd one that doesn't, before it's standing on top of you. So here's what I'll walk you through. Four signs a water buffalo is about to charge, and the one question that sorts a warning from the real thing: Sign one — when a grazing buffalo quits being a cow and locks onto you Sign two — the big show, the head-tossing and snorting and the bluff charge, and why that's a warning, not the kill signal Sign three — the one most blokes get wrong, the sudden stillness that means it's already committed Sign four — the committed, wounded or cornered buffalo, and getting something solid between you and it Real Northern Territory cases, honest advice, nothing to sell you and no fear-peddling. If you want the straight version of what's actually dangerous out in the Australian bush, and what plainly isn't, subscribe and stick around. I'll see you out there. Just so we're square: this is general information, not professional wildlife or survival advice. If you work or travel in buffalo country, always do what the local rangers and National Parks tell you. #WaterBuffalo #BuffaloCharge #TopEnd #NorthernTerritory #Australia #WildlifeSafety #BushSurvival #FeralBuffalo #ArnhemLand #DangerousAnimals #OutbackAustralia #BuffaloAttack #AnimalAttacks #SurvivalTips
