Ten bush rifles that get blokes killed in the scrub, and the one that actually does the job. If you hunt pigs, scrub bulls or buffalo anywhere in this country, this is the honest version of the calibre argument that nobody behind the gun shop counter will give you.
I'm Mick Dawson. Forty years shooting pigs, goats and scrub bulls across the New England tablelands and up into the Top End, and I've seen what happens when a bloke brings the wrong rifle, or the wrong load, to a big boar at a bad angle. In this one I rank the ten rifles and loads that let blokes down in the bush, worst to least bad, and finish on the one rifle I'd actually stake a mate's life on.
We go through the lot. The .22 that was never a pig rifle. The .223 and the .243 let down by light varmint bullets. The cheap 7.62x39 surplus round. The .30-30 living on an old reputation. The .308 and .30-06 fed the wrong soft points. The .45-70 carried with the wrong load. The big magnums like the 9.3x62 and the .375 H&H, and where they fit. Plus the truth about the boar's shoulder shield, why the vitals sit where deer logic says they don't, and why bullet choice and shot placement beat the number stamped on the box every single time.
It was never about the calibre. It's about the projectile, the angle, and a rifle you can actually run fast when it counts.
If you've ever argued the best calibre for pigs, or wondered why a good shot still lost a boar in the lignum, this one's for you.
Tell me down in the comments what's actually in your safe for pigs, and what projectile is sitting in the magazine right now tonight. Not what you mean to load one day. What's in it.
Subscribe for the honest version every time. No fairytales, no gun-shop sales pitch. Just what reaches the animal and what doesn't. I'll see you in the scrub.
DISCLAIMER
This video is general information and commentary, not legal, safety, or professional hunting advice. In Australia, personal protection is not a lawful reason to own or carry a firearm anywhere — there is no self-defence carry. Hunting buffalo requires the correct firearms licence, registration, secure storage, and a genuine reason (such as hunting with the landowner's permission or primary production). Most feral buffalo are on Aboriginal land, which requires permission through the relevant Land Council. Firearms, park and land-access rules change and differ between states and territories — always check the current Northern Territory rules and get your permissions in writing before you go. Hunt legally, ethically, and safely.
