A ribeye runs eighteen, nineteen dollars a pound this year. On a fixed income, that is not a supper anymore. That is a birthday.
I never had ribeye money. Not at home, and not in the school kitchen where four hundred children ate on my watch for thirty-five years. So here are ten meats that will do more for your table than that steak, and most of them cost a third as much, or less.
Counting down all ten. For each one: what to look for in the case, what it costs next to a ribeye, and how to cut it, freeze it or cook it so none of it goes to waste.
One of them you already buy, and the store sells it to you twice. Number five is the cut people are embarrassed to put in the cart. Number three is the meat your mother made you eat. And number one comes off the very muscle a ribeye is cut from, for about half the price. I served it to my husband on his birthday for eleven years.
I am Mrs. Doris. Thirty-five years of feeding a school kitchen in Scioto County, Ohio, on a dollar and five cents a tray.
Prices are US supermarket averages as of fall 2026 and vary by store and region. Cook chicken livers all the way through, with no pink in the middle.
What is the cheap cut your family lived on that you still think beats any steak in the store? Tell me below.
