Description
Bada Bagh, about 6 km north of Jaisalmer in Rajasthan, hides one of the Thar Desert's smartest rainwater harvesting systems. In the early 16th century, Maharawal Jait Singh II had the Jait Bandh built, a stone-block dam reported at over 1,200 ft long, to create the Jait Sar reservoir. Jaisalmer gets only about 185 mm of rain a year, mostly in the monsoon, while potential evaporation is around 1,850 mm. The dam works as a masonry gravity structure, where its own weight resists the hydrostatic thrust, and that thrust rises with the square of water depth. Outflow channels release surplus water gently towards the garden, protecting both the wall and the soil from erosion. Water that soaks into the soil is shielded from the desert sun, keeping the root zone alive long after the monsoon. The garden later became the royal chhatri grounds of Jaisalmer's Bhati rulers, proof that engineering came first and history followed.

Technical Disclaimer: This Short is an educational 3D architectural reconstruction. Published sources report the dam's length (~1,200 ft) and 16th-century origin, but no survey-grade drawings of crest height, spillway or outflow-channel geometry were found. The cross-section, channel layout, flow depths and force vectors are therefore physics-based visualizations, not measured data. Scale figures and CAD overlays are symbolic, and all effects are explained through engineering physics, not mysticism.
