Description
In 1980, a woman appeared to win the Boston Marathon. There was just one problem: investigators concluded that she had not run the complete course.
April 21, 1980. Boston, Massachusetts. Jacqueline Gareau crossed the finish line in 2:34:28 after leading the women’s race through the heat. But Rosie Ruiz had already been crowned with a reported time of 2:31:56.
Runners did not remember Ruiz passing them. Officials could not find her in earlier checkpoint records or race photographs. Witnesses reported seeing a woman matching her description enter near Kenmore Square. Eight days later, the Boston Athletic Association removed Ruiz’s result and declared Gareau the official champion.
One myth still needs correcting: the subway allegation concerned Ruiz’s earlier New York Marathon. How she reached her entry point in Boston was never established.
