Description

On December 20, 1943, Luftwaffe pilot Franz Stigler found Charlie Brown’s crippled B-17F, Ye Olde Pub, barely able to remain in the air over Germany. The American tail gunner was already dead and other crewmen were wounded. Instead of firing, Stigler accompanied the bomber beyond the German coast, saluted, and turned away. Brown and the surviving crew crossed the North Sea and landed at RAF Seething. Brown began searching for the unknown pilot in 1986. Franz Stigler answered in 1990, and the former enemies became close friends. THE AXER STORIES — WAR & HUMANITY A man who could have killed chose not to.
