Description

At 41,000 feet, Air Canada Flight 143 lost both engines. The aircraft had simply run out of fuel—and 69 people were aboard. On 23 July 1983, a chain of fuel-gauge, procedural and metric-conversion failures left a nearly new Boeing 767 gliding above Manitoba. Captain Robert Pearson and First Officer Maurice Quintal could not reach Winnipeg, so they turned toward a former military runway at Gimli. They did not know part of it was being used for motor racing. All 69 people aboard survived without serious injury.
