Description

After the 1985 Mexico City earthquake, rescuers kept listening to a collapsed hospital for more than a week — and heard a baby cry. At 7:19 a.m. on 19 September 1985, a magnitude 8.1 earthquake tore through Mexico City. Hospitals including Juárez Hospital and the Hospital General de México collapsed, trapping doctors, nurses, mothers and newborns. Volunteers formed human chains with buckets and bare hands when heavy equipment was still hours away. In the days that followed, newborns began to be pulled alive from the rubble — press called them "miracle babies." On 28 September, more than eight days after the quake, José Medina Hernández was lifted alive from under the pediatric ward of General Hospital, pale and underweight but breathing. The wider civilian rescue effort helped inspire the volunteer brigade later known as Los Topos.
