Description
She never once told me she was praying for him.
That is the first thing I want you to know about my mother, and it took me half my life to understand why it mattered. For nineteen years she prayed for my brother - who walked out of the faith at twenty-two and did not come back until he was forty-one - and in all that time I never heard her say the words "I am praying for you" to his face. Not once.
I thought that meant she had given up. I was wrong, the way I have been wrong about almost everything my mother did. She had learned something painful: that "I am praying for you," said to a child who has walked away, does not land as love. It lands as a verdict.
So many of you have asked for this video, in the comments of nearly every one I have made. My son does not believe anymore. My daughter has not been in a church in eleven years. I do not know how to pray. I do not know if it is my fault.
In this episode of The Mexican Mother's Bible, Bertha gives you what her mother actually DID - seven things, and just as importantly the five things she deliberately STOPPED doing, which nobody ever talks about:
• She stopped arguing completely - "I was trying to win him with the very thing he was running from" (Romans 2:4 - God's KINDNESS leads to repentance, not God's better argument)
• She kept the door open and his place at the table - and the accusation that came with it, the same one they made against Jesus: "This man welcomes sinners and eats with them" (Luke 15:1-2)
• She prayed the next step, not the ending - and why the far country did what nineteen years of arguing never could (Luke 15:17)
• She kept the candle in the window and blessed him at the door anyway - blessing is not approving
• She stopped the ambushes - the verse in the birthday card, the surprise pastor at Sunday dinner, the sigh (1 Peter 3:1-2 - "won over WITHOUT words")
• She kept living, and refused to disappear into it (2 Samuel 12:20)
• She kept going nineteen years past the point where it made sense (Luke 18:1 - and the story of Monica, who wept seventeen years for a son named Augustine)
FIRST, she takes the stone out of your shoe: Proverbs 22:6 was never a verdict on your parenting. A proverb is a general truth about how life usually goes, not a contract with God's signature on it - and the proof is that the perfect Father raised children in a garden with nothing missing and they walked away in chapter three. "I reared children and brought them up, but they have rebelled against me." (Isaiah 1:2)
And she does NOT sell you a machine. Her mother prayed all seven for two people and got two different answers - one came home after nineteen years, one never came home at all. Bertha says so plainly, because you should trust her more for that, not less.
Then the verse she held back for the end - the one that let her finally make this video, and it is for the mother whose child never returned. Stay to the finish.
"...golden bowls full of incense, which are the prayers of God's people." - Revelation 5:8
💛 A gentle word: not one prayer you have prayed for that child fell on the floor. Not the ones at the sink at eleven at night with the water running so nobody would hear you. Not the ones you fell asleep in the middle of. They are being HELD, in bowls, in front of the throne. Your praying is not a slot machine that has to pay out before you die to have been worth something. It is deposit. And a mother who dies still praying for a child who has not come home - her prayers do not die with her. They are not in her hands.
I am not a pastor. I have no letters after my name and no pulpit to stand behind. I am a mother with a worn Bible, passing down what was passed down to me. When I tell you what I believe a passage means, go and read it for yourself. Do not take my word for it. Take His.
If this found you tonight, please LIKE and SUBSCRIBE so it reaches another mother at one in the morning. God bless you, mija.
📖 Tell me in the comments: who are you praying for, and how long has it been? You do not have to use a name - say "my son," say "my daughter." AND IF YOUR CHILD CAME HOME, I am asking you especially: write it down here. How long it took, and what you think finally reached them. There is a woman scrolling this comment section tonight who needs to read that somebody's nineteen years ended - and she will believe another mother in a way she will never believe me. Be gentle with each other here. Tell me your county too. I read every one.
