Description

This 17-Year-Old Laptop Was TOO SLOW… Until I Found Tiny Linux! This old laptop is 17 years old, powered by a Core 2 Duo T6600 and originally running Windows 10 with just 2GB of RAM. Even after upgrading this old laptop to 4GB, Windows 10 was still using over half the memory at idle and constantly keeping the CPU busy. So I replaced Windows with Peppermint OS, a lightweight Debian-based Linux distro using XFCE. And the difference was huge. With Peppermint OS, this old laptop uses only around 500–700MB of RAM at idle, while still giving us a full desktop experience. I tested LibreWolf, Reddit, YouTube, multitasking, Synaptic Package Manager, GIMP, and even Minecraft. YouTube was playable, web browsing worked surprisingly well, and with five browser tabs open, this old laptop was still usable. Then came Minecraft 1.8.9. After lowering the settings, Peppermint OS managed around 50 FPS before dropping closer to 20 FPS in fullscreen. Peppermint OS isn’t the tiniest Linux distro out there, but for an old laptop like this, it might be exactly what it needs. Would you install Peppermint OS on your old laptop?
